Janarth Programme in India - 3

Ramani JAYASUNDERE

07 / 1994

Janarth is a credit programme implemented by Action Aid,India.

The credit scheme is operated among small and marginal agricultural families but concentrates on families whose landholding is less than 3 hectares or 7.5 acres.

The programme operates on a Grameen Bank styled grouping system. The programme population is grouped under an operating unit called the Agricultural Service Centre(ASC).

Credit is disbursed by Janarth to family units. The loans are specifically for income generating activities and for agriculture under four categories; namely landbased activity, non landbased activity, consumption and agricultural inputs.

Loans in the first three categories are provided for families whose landholding is less than 3 hectares or 7.5 acres.

Credit under agricultural inputs is disbursed to all ASC members irrespective of their landholding but, the loans so disbursed are subject to an upper limit and only one member from each family is allowed to become a member in the ASC thereby restricting one loan per family.

Comments

The credit programme, by providing loans for two groups (based on their landholding)covers a larger population. It has combined two separate target groups into one programme which works effectively due to its defined categories to which loans are provided, strict terms on loans given to the more affluent in the group and strict default conditions.
